You know you're supposed to drink lots of water. We've all heard that water is good for your skin; that it helps you lose weight because it keeps you from drinking liquids with calories; and that it helps flush toxins from the body.

Maybe you've even heard that it's good for your heart, and that a lot of headaches are caused by dehydration.

Did you know that when you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated? It's a good idea to just develop a habit of having a glass of water when you get up, a glass with each meal, and a glass between meals. Added to the water you'll get from your food, that will keep you pretty well hydrated.

The benefits of drinking water go a lot further...

· One study demonstrated that people who drank more than five glasses of water a day had a 41% lower risk of death from heart attack than people drinking less than two glasses
· Another study found that drinking plenty of water reduced the risk of colon cancer by 45%
· Water helps replenish serotonin, which helps reduce depression
· Water aids the formation of strong bone, reducing the risk of osteoporosis
· Plenty of water helps generate electrical and magnetic energy in your cells, keeping your energy up
· Water can help reduce sleep disorders by aiding the production of melatonin
· Water increases the efficiency of the immune system
· Water lubricates the joints and helps prevent arthritis and back pain
· According to Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., it even reduces the risk of Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's.

Here's the problem

Much of our water is contaminated with all kinds of chemicals. You can check some of my other articles for details, but the short version is that some 2100 synthetic and harmful-- even cancer-causing, chemicals have been found in our drinking water.

The best way to get the benefits of drinking water without the risks of impure water is to install a home water filter. They're not very expensive to buy, and they're inexpensive to operate. They're far less expensive than bottled water, which may be no better than your tap water, anyway, and they're far less harmful to the environment.

There are two major kinds of filters-"reverse osmosis" and "carbon block." Carbon block filters are less expensive to install and to operate, they don't waste water as reverse osmosis filters do, and they take up less room under your sink. After lots of research, I chose a carbon block filter for my home.
